Branching Out with Better Lives

Thu, 8th Dec 2022

#TeamStranraer have been attending the ‘Branching out’ sessions since September and we can say without a doubt that those 9 Wednesdays have been well spent!

Our group focused on environmental friendliness, building shelters, cooking new and exciting snacks, walking the woods of Kirroughtree and getting to experience the different seasons come into play, and getting to know the forest better!

The young people who attended each session walked away with different experiences to share, from knowing how to start and cook over an open fire, to how to make a woodland floor mandala, it was different each week from games in the cool crisp air, to huddling under a shelter during the rain near an open fire! We also had the pleasure of bringing things home with us such as handmade friendship bracelets to remember the sessions by.

Nearing the 6 week mark winter was creeping in slowly which meant it began to get darker earlier in the afternoon, so for the last few weeks the group have been experimenting with using head torches in the dark which was one thing we all enjoyed!

Overall the branching out sessions were an astounding success, giving each young person new memories to remember for each week they attended, learning new skills and taking those experiences with them if they were to ever do another outdoors / woodland activity. A big thank you to DGOWL for running these sessions, our young people really enjoyed their time experiencing the outdoors!
