Rachel Pursues Design!

Wed, 8th Jun 2022

Rachel, part of #TeamStranraer, has been working on her design skills as part of her Expressive Arts ASDAN course.

As part of our Bridge 2 Employment @ Wigtownshire project, our young people are offered a variety of ASDAN courses that match their individual interests and expertise. Through her expressive Arts ASDAN Rachel has been pursuing her interest in textiles and design, as part of the initial steps of her coursework Rachel took a trip to Kirkcudbright to visit the studio of Textile Artist, Morag Macpherson.

Morag uses a combination of art, crafts, design, and digital technology to create fabric and wallpaper. She uses her materials to make stunning pieces of clothing, including silk kimonos. During Rachel’s visit to Morag’s studio, she looked at the silk fabrics she had designed and learnt more about the design process. Rachel was then able to design her own pattern using a specialist IT program.  Morag took Rachel to one of the outlets to see her work for sale.

Since her visit with Morag, Rachel has taken everything she has learnt, including the importance of placement in a design, embroidery stitches, securely tying off and glueing gems to the material, to create her own jacket.

She chose the appliqué flower and sewed it on by hand. She then sewed buttons and stuck jewels on the jacket to embellish it and add to the overall design.

Rachel enjoyed designing and sewing her jacket and is looking forward to her next project.

Rachel’s design is stunning, and we are incredibly proud of what she has achieved. Well done, Rachel!
