Remember, Remember the Fifth of November!

This week we are learning all about Bonfire Night!

As the nights are getting longer and the days are getting colder, at our B2E @Nithsdale and Annandale project the team is looking for any opportunity to take the workroom and our learning outside. The approach of bonfire night was no exception.

At the beginning of the week, our young people started researching the history of Bonfire Night, and the events that took place in 1605 when Guy Fawkes and his accomplices attempted and failed to use gunpowder to blow up King James I and the Houses of Parliament. As part of our learning, the young people started gaining an understanding of fire and pressure and did a couple of experiments to test that.

The first experiment was covering a small dish of water and a lit candle with a glass, the result is seeing the water being pulled into the glass and the candle rising. This is due to the flame having used all the oxygen in the glass and the change in pressure. We also tried, less successfully, the mentos in a bottle of coke experiment. The main result was Liz getting drenched!

We also spent some time experimenting in our expressive arts course, where the young people tried different techniques to create a firework effect, from paint, chalk, and other materials. We finished off the day with our own little bonfire, toasting marshmallows, and enjoying some sparklers.
