The Yoga Project
Wed, 11th Aug 2021The Yoga Project set out to develop the application of yoga in reducing stress and anxiety in children with ASD, ADHD and other disabilities and in helping them to manage their own anxieties. The rationale for using yoga with this group of children is:
- To promote self-awareness – yoga strengthens self-awareness enabling people to develop their own coping mechanisms to manage stressful situations whenever they occur
- To promote structure – Individuals with ASD need a clear structure and routine which helps them maintain control, and concentration and sustain long-term interest. Yoga is based upon sequences of movements and postures in a clear structure, rhythm and routine.
- Coordination and Physical Fitness – young people often miss out on PE in school due to their physiological limitations, sensory and visual processing; inability to ‘play by the rules’ and work with others.
The yoga taught provided individuals with consistent, reliable patterning along with progressive physical challenges. It also provided a sensory ‘diet; that helped individuals find their confidence and develop their physical skills in a safe and non-competitive environment.
The Better Lives Partnership is eager to support young people with ASD, their families, and the professionals who work with them by creating innovative projects. We are continually seeking opportunities to expand and grow the charity and rely on the enthusiasm and initiative of our employees to help in this aim.
