Coastal Culture
Tue, 13th Jan 2026
As part of their Coastal Culture Project funded by D&G Council’s Coastal Benefit Fund, the young people in Stranraer have been learning about their local heritage and enjoying a wide range of activities centred on our stunning environment and customs. Interesting workshops have been held, covering storytelling in Kilsture Forest and photography and drone video making along Stranraer’s beautiful coastline. The images produced went on to inspire the creation of some lovely felt pictures, supported by local artist Linda Irving.
Our creativity was expanded and we’ve produced some wonderful artwork based on flora and fauna inspired by visits to Kitchen Coos and Ewes and walks around our local area – we even designed our own BLP tartan!
We’ve welcome a local historian into our workroom to tell us about Stranraer’s bygone days and we’ve written some amazing poetry, delving into the local dialect and tales from the past. We visited the Wigtown Book Festival to explore the writing of other local authors and participated in a storytelling session focused on the Wigtown Martyrs which again inspired the production of some very moving poetry from our group. A visit to the Transport Museum in Glasgow helped us to reflect on the ways that Scottish heritage has impacted on our own lives in Stranraer.
