Abi Mordin Joins Us For Environment!

Fri, 11th Feb 2022

Our Castle Douglas group has been delighted to have Abi Mordin join us for their accredited environment-course!

Since starting our accredited environment course, supported by The Holywood Trust, in September 2021 our young people in Castle Douglas have enjoyed a range of topics and activities. This has included trips to the beach to clean up litter from our shores, learning about recycling and making our own tote bags from recycled fabric, and investigating Fairtrade chocolate (with a taste test of course!).

Abi Mordin is the Director of Propagate, a worker-led community of activists that specialises in food sustainability and works with organisations and groups to help them by providing opportunities to grow food, create vibrant greenspaces and cook healthy meals using local produce. Propagate believe that by changing food systems we can start enacting real solutions for Climate Change.

We were delighted to welcome Abi for three sessions on food systems, and the impact of the food we eat on the environment. In our first session, Abi spent time with the young people discussing the food growth that occurs in Scotland and what impact the food we grow has on our environment. They had a great morning discussing what vegetables and fruit it is possible to grow in our climate and what most farmers in Scotland are farming on the land.

The group also started preparing some questions on biodiversity and farming, in preparation for our trip to The Ethical Dairy the following week. The group had a great day at the farm and took a tour with David who taught us all about the farm’s biodiversity and how they care for their cows to produce their amazing cheese and ice cream.

The young people were really interested to hear about the effects of not using pesticides, or culling badgers, had on the other species of animals in the woodlands surrounding the farms, we also had a great time befriending Sky the sheepdog!

Finally, Abi helped us pull together everything we’ve learnt to produce a locally sourced meal of burgers, roasted squash and kale, which made for a delicious group lunch.
