Food, glorious food!
Thu, 7th May 2026Thanks to funding from Sainsburys (Stranraer) and ANCBC (Dumfries) we are delivering enhanced food, nutrition and cookery sessions! So from cooking skills to learning about food groups and even compiling our very own recipe book with a focus on affordability and health, it’s been a mouthwatering year so far!
In Dumfries we’ve had Fakeaway Friday and seasonal celebrations with Burns Day being marked with Haggis, Neeps and Tatties, Pancakes on Shrove Tuesday and Chicken Noodle Soup to celebrate Chinese New Year! This way we’re making sure we are learning about the cultural and celebratory significance of food as well as it’s nutritional value and how to cook it!
The all important social aspect of sharing food together is of course top of the agenda and after all the hard work we enjoy eating it!!I

In Stranraer our group went out to the nearby Craignelder Hotel for a delicious meal to celebrate BLP Stranraer’s 6th Birthday! Beforehand, our young people held discussions and completed activities focused on the social and nutritional benefits of making healthy choices and sharing food around the table. They then followed up with some reflection on their chosen meals and added yet more evidence to their coursework.
In Stranraer we’ve also enjoyed lunch clubs at our site with cheese and halloumi burgers and we learned to make a comforting sausage casserole to get us through the winter.
Both sites are working hard on ‘The Big BLP Cook Book’, which is going to consist of easy to make recipes with a focus on affordability and healthy choices. The first section chosen in Stranraer was ‘Super Smoothies’ and while we don’t want to give any details away, we can say the recipe ideas being floated sound mouthwatering! In Dumfries the focus so far has been on delicious soup recipes.
