Our Dumfries Workroom is Open!

Fri, 17th Sep 2021

On Monday 13th September we welcomed young people into our workroom in Dumfries for the first time!

Our new group of young people spent their first day in the workroom trying their hand at woodwork, making soup and toasties for everyone’s lunch, and even trying out some Boxercise. The rest of the first week in Dumfries was spent completing a great selection of activities including a BBQ, a music jam with Paragon music, and Geocaching activities.

On Thursday B2E @ Nithsdale and Annadale started their environment program. The Holywood Trust granted funding to Better Lives Partnership to introduce a new accredited environmental course across all three of our locations. The course will aim to highlight the impact that climate change is having on the planet and to explore the ways that we can raise awareness, take positive action, and educate others to respect and preserve planet earth.

In Dumfries they are looking to:

  • A block of ‘grow your own ‘gardening sessions
  • Meat free Wednesday pledges and awareness campaign.
  • Design and create a bee friendly garden
  • Pilot running flea market/ car boot sale to encourage recycling/ re using items / Crichton Trust
  • Up-cycling furniture project/ Shax
  • Trips to weather station/ hydro-electricity station and windfarm
  • Organize litter picking events

On Thursday our Dumfries group went to Southerness beach to do their first beach clean. While it was great to see that Southerness beach is already a very clean space the group were still able to comb the sand and take away pieces of rubbish to prevent further damage to the environment.

The week ended with a nice day gardening and playing social games. The introduction week to B2E @ Nithsdale and Annadale has been a great success thanks to Team Officer Catherine Phillips and her fabulous team. Irvine, who moved to our Dumfries location after have previously taken part in B2E @ Stewartry, said about the week:

“Its good, there is plenty of smiling faces, and everyone is funny. My favourite part of the week has been making new friends.”

ASDAN sessions and the B2E timetable will be starting up next week and we are excited to see what other great work our Dumfries group do!
