Stranraer Can Do!
Tue, 25th Jan 2022In Stranraer, our young people have been taking part in Leonard Cheshire’s Can-Do Project and were awarded certificates last week for participating in the project.
Leonard Cheshire is a charity that provides support to people with disabilities. Their aims are to help people to live, learn and work as independently as they choose whatever their ability. Through their Can-Do Project, they support individuals aged 16-35 with a disability or long-term health condition in skills development. They focus on developing skills and building confidence through fun activities, that are engaging and planned for the participant’s interests. Better Lives Partnership has worked closely with Leonard Cheshire before, when the young people in Castle Douglas took part in the Can-Do project back in December 2020.
During their participation in the project, our young people in Stranraer made a trip to Kitchen Coos and Ewes, linking with their work on the local environment, and has a wonderful day out learning about Highland Coos and Texel sheep. They watched the sheepdogs hard at work and took plenty of pictures which went into their 2022 calendar which they also made as part of the project.
Our Stranraer Can Doers made a wonderful calendar, and they sent 60 copies to A Listening Ear in Wigtownshire to support people who were isolated over Christmas. They also sent them as thoughtful gifts to the young people in Castle Douglas and Stranraer, so a copy of the calendar has pride of place in each of our workrooms across the region.
In addition, the young people also made a Christmas tree for the Penninghame St John’s Chruch Christmas Tree Festival which was displayed over December. The group were thoroughly deserving of the range of certificates that they were awarded by Leonard Cheshire, including City and Guilds, Saltire and Can-Do.
